  • Booktime at bedtime

Posted Thursday May 28th 2009 by Natasha Worswick

Yesterday was the beginning of Booktrust’s very first Bedtime Reading week. As part of National Family Week, this is a great campaign that we hope will promote lots of snuggling down with books just before it’s time for lights out.

If you’re not already enjoying a bedtime story together, why not give it a go? You can find book recommendations and suggestions over on the right-hand side of every page on this site. And if you’re feeling a little uncertain, check out our top tips for family reading.

Or why not take the opportunity to pop into your local library, bookshop or charity shop to browse what’s on offer? A great read doesn’t have to cost the earth, but it will give you all an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only will it feed your child’s imagination and inspire their love of language, it’ll provide a special time for bonding too. And before you know it, you could have a whole new bedtime routine to enjoy.

I’d love to hear your experiences of reading together at bedtime, so tell me all about it in the comments. Any surprises, or tips you’d like to share?

  • Children’s poetry in the news

A few days ago the Bookseller (a magazine for the book publishing industry) commented on the decline in children’s poetry being published.

They observed that children themselves often love poetry – it’s just the adults who are less keen. Mums, dads and carers, we can’t allow this to happen! If you’ve ever read a poem aloud with your little one, the chances are you’ll have seen the fun it can bring for yourselves. If not, see if you can track down a poem to share together – children love the rhythm, the rhyme and repetition because it makes it easy to join in. And the sillier the subject matter the better!

Here at Booktime we’re on a mission to help children discover a love of poetry – because we absolutely love the stuff. Last year we published an abridged version of The Puffin Book of Fantastic First Poems (cleverly calling it The Booktime Book of Fantastic First Poems) to put in every book pack going out to children across England - that’s over 700,000 children receiving a copy of this brilliant book of poems. And happily this year, we are doing just the same.
