Little Rabbit's Christmas
The excitement of Christmas is palpable in this gently moral tale about togetherness and sharing.
For his Christmas present, Little Rabbit is given a bright red sledge, and he sets out in the snow, ignoring his family, to show it off to his friends. It is soon clear, though, that none of them will get a turn. Only when the sledge breaks does it dawn on Little Rabbit that family and friends can be worth having.
In the characterisation of Little Rabbit, Horse has brilliantly and tenderly observed a pre-school child’s sense of self-importance and self-absorption.
His use of colour to create mood, and the charm of his still-visible pencil lines, add an old-fashioned edge of magic and innocence to this otherwise contemporary tale. Well worth a space in Santa’s sack.
