Libraries particularly benefited from the enthusiasm generated for the Hairy Maclary series of books after the pilot Booktime book packs were handed out in Southwark and Warwickshire in 2006.
In some areas, librarians went into nearby schools to talk about books and reading in assembly. Many public libraries ran 'Meet Hairy Maclary and Friends' reading and craft events for reception children and their families during the half term holidays. These events were publicised in leaflets given to the children who received the book packs by their class teachers. These initiatives really helped to enhance the links between libraries, schools and families.
A librarian in Southwark told us:
"The children certainly enjoyed themselves. It was a bigger turnout than usual. The parents joined in as well, and we had to set up an additional table, as there were so many people."
All libraries reported notably high attendance at the Hairy Maclary family events and some libraries in Warwickshire found them so popular that they continued to run them for six months.
A father told us that his son liked the pilot Booktime bookpack and:
"Also prompted me to join him into the Library instead of using cards of siblings, which he seems quite pleased about. Thanks."
Many libraries have also suggested inviting class visits to the local library following the hand-out of the Booktime packs this year.
